What Is an HDPE Flange Adapter?
An HDPE flange adapter (also called a flange adaptor or stub flange) is a pre-molded high-density polyethylene fitting designed to create a detachable, bolted flange connection at the end of an HDPE pipe. It bridges the gap between the thermoplastic pipeline and flanged equipment — such as valves, pumps, meters, tanks, or metal pipe flanges.
Unlike a permanent butt fusion joint, a flange adapter allows the pipeline to be disconnected and reassembled. This makes it essential for any system that requires regular maintenance, inspection, or equipment replacement.
The typical HDPE flange adapter assembly includes:
- ✅HDPE flange adapter body — fused to the HDPE pipe end
-
- ✅Backing flange (backing ring) — usually ductile iron, provides bolt-hole strength
-
- ✅Gasket — seals between flange faces
-
- ✅Bolts, nuts, washers — compress the joint

How Does an HDPE Flange Adapter Work?
The working principle is straightforward:
- 1.The HDPE flange adapter is butt-fused or socket-fused to the end of the HDPE pipe.
- 2.A ductile iron backing ring slides over the adapter and sits behind its flange face.
- 3.A gasket is placed against the adapter’s sealing face.
- 4.The assembly is bolted to a mating flange on the valve, pump, or equipment.
- 5.When bolts are tightened, the backing ring compresses the gasket — creating a watertight seal.
The HDPE adapter itself does not carry the bolting load. The ductile iron backing ring handles the mechanical stress, while the HDPE adapter provides corrosion resistance and fusion compatibility with the pipe.
Types of HDPE Flange Adapters
-
1.Stub Flange (Loose Flange Type)
The most common design. A short HDPE sleeve (stub end) is fused to the pipe, and a separate backing ring slides over it. This two-piece design is cost-effective and available in all SDRs.
-
2.Integral Flange Adapter
A one-piece fitting with a fixed flange face molded directly into the body. More compact and rigid than the stub flange design. Easier to install in tight spaces but typically limited to smaller diameters.
-
3.Transition Flange Adapter
A specialized adapter that connects HDPE pipe to a different material — such as steel, copper, or PVC. Used for pipeline transitions at equipment connections or material changes.

In practice, many manufacturers use “flange adapter” and “stub flange” interchangeably. The critical factor is ensuring the adapter, backing ring, and gasket are all sized to match the pipe SDR and flange standard.

Applications
HDPE flange adapters are used in:
- ✅Municipal water supply — connecting HDPE pipe to valves, pumps, and water treatment equipment
-
- ✅Wastewater systems — corrosion-resistant connection to lift stations and treatment plants
-
- ✅Irrigation — connecting pumps, filters, and control valves in agricultural systems
-
- ✅Mining & slurry — heavy-duty connections for pipeline transfer points
-
- ✅Industrial plants — chemical, food, and pharmaceutical processing lines
-
- ✅Natural gas distribution — PE100 gas-rated adapters for city gas networks
-
- ✅Marine & offshore — saltwater-resistant connections for cooling systems
Installation Steps
Step 1: Prepare the Pipe
Cut the HDPE pipe square. Chamfer and clean the pipe end.
Step 2: Fuse the Adapter
Use a butt fusion machine to fuse the HDPE flange adapter to the pipe end. Follow standard fusion parameters for your pipe SDR and material grade.
Step 3: Cool Properly
Allow the fusion joint to cool completely before moving the assembly.
Step 4: Position the Backing Ring
Slide the ductile iron backing ring behind the adapter flange face. Align bolt holes with the mating flange.
Step 5: Install the Gasket
Place the correct gasket material (EPDM for water, NBR for gas/oil) between the adapter face and the mating flange.
Step 6: Bolt Up
Insert bolts and tighten in a star/crisscross pattern. Torque in 2–3 passes to ensure even compression.
Step 7: Pressure Test
Perform a hydrostatic test at 1.5× working pressure. Check all joints for leakage.

Advantages of HDPE Flange Adapters
- ✅Corrosion resistance — no rust, no internal scaling, ideal for buried and corrosive service
-
- ✅Lightweight — 1/7 the weight of steel, easier handling and lower installation cost
-
- ✅Leak-free fusion joint — the adapter-to-pipe joint is a homogeneous fusion, not a mechanical seal
-
- ✅Long service life — 50+ years with minimal maintenance
-
- ✅Flexible — absorbs ground movement and vibration
-
- ✅Cost-effective — lower total installed cost vs. steel flanged systems
FAQ
What is the difference between a flange adapter and a stub end?
A flange adapter is a one-piece molded fitting with an integrated flange face. A stub end is a short sleeve that requires a separate backing ring. Both serve the same purpose but use different designs.
Can I reuse an HDPE flange adapter?
The HDPE adapter itself should not be re-fused. However, the ductile iron backing ring can be reused if it is undamaged.
What backing ring should I use?
Use a ductile iron backing ring matched to your flange standard (ANSI B16.5, EN 1092-1, etc.) and pipe SDR. For buried service, specify FBE epoxy coating.
How do I choose the right gasket?
- Oil/gas/hydrocarbons: NBR (nitrile)
- Chemical service: consult compatibility charts
